Newmill 5 miles south of Hawick on the A7 is the start of this circular walking route. An easy walk up the Allan Water valley, passing Allanhaugh Pele Tower through the woods on your right, a worthwhile detour, then follow the road to Allan Water Reservoir.
A gradual climb awaits, over grassland to the summit of Whitchesters Hill.
A Cairn has been built on the summit to the memory of Nan Lyle . The names of the surrounding hills viewed from this spot are shown on the top of the cairn, to the Eildons, the Minto Hills and Penielheugh to the East round to Skelfhill Pen to the south.
The summit gives you a glorious view across the Teviot valley to Branxholme Castle, the home of the legendary Bold Buccleuch, the Warden of the Scottish Middle March and most renowed warrior of his time.
